Care and Maintenance for White Gold Chains

A great way to express fashion, wealth and remembrance is with the use of white gold chains. White gold is an alloy of gold and at least one other white metal. It could be palladium, nickel or manganese. It is more durable than pure gold because of its mixed properties. It may also be coupled with silver, copper and platinum.

The color is usually generalized as that of the color of rhodium plating which is just used to hide the true color of white gold. In reality, the color varies from a spectrum of colors such as pale yellow or pale rose and even tinted brown.

The quality of this type of gold is also measured in carats. The highest rating would be 22 karats. Other karat ratings for white gold are 20k, 18k, 16k and 14k. Remember that the higher the karat rating, the more expensive it is and the softer the jewelry becomes. A common formulation or mixture of is 90 weight percent of gold combined with 10 weight percent of copper.

White gold chains have been used as necklaces, bracelets, anklets and even clothes accessories. Some collect it, some use it to follow fashion trends, while some simply get one to give as a gift. Either way, getting one is an investment that you have to think about and take care of.

One way of maintaining the luster and color of your white gold chains is washing it with warm water and detergent soap. Use a cloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush to rinse out all the dirt from the nooks and joints of your chain most especially if you perspire on the chain when you use it. Rinse the chain properly and make sure there are no left over detergent soap on it because the soap may build up and cause stains on the chain. Air-dry the chain properly and make sure no moisture is left before storing it.

Different colored jewelry should be stored separately to maintain their quality. Make sure to remove jewelry when doing household work that requires the use of some chemicals because they might interact with each other and ruin the white gold chains that you are wearing. Aside from the chemical interaction, doing heavy duty work with your jewelry on might create scratches and nicks. Make it a habit to immediately take off all jewelry upon arriving home.

Soaking white gold in 15 ml ammonia mixed with 15 ml warm water for 15 minutes will also improve the quality of your chain. Immersing your jewelry in this solution for more than 15 minutes may remove the plating instead of just increasing its shine and luster. Although this may be harmful to some alloys, consult your jeweler for proper care of the type of alloy your white gold is made of. Another care tip is to change your rhodium plating into platinum plating to make your white gold chain last for more than five years.
